DESSA System and ClassLink

Overview

This article contains guidance on rostering the DESSA System through ClassLink as well as setting up a single sign-on connection. 

ClassLink Rostering

The DESSA System currently utilizes both single sign-on (SSO) and rostering through ClassLink. To roster the DESSA System with ClassLink, please use the following instructions:

Adding the "Aperture Education Rostering" App and Setting Permissions

1. Add the "Aperture Education Rostering" app to your ClassLink Roster Server.
   • Navigate to your Roster Server
   • Select the "Apps" tab at the top of the screen
   • Click the "+ADD" button on the right side of the screen
   • Search for "Aperture Education Rostering" 
   • Click the "+Add" button on the "Aperture Education Rostering" app

2. Once you have added the "Aperture Education Rostering" app to your server, the next step is to set up the permissions to determine what data you will send to Aperture Education to be rostered. 
   • You can choose from the following permission types:
     • Rule-Based: ClassLink's recommended permission type, lets you choose permissions based on roster data.
     • Full: Sends all student and staff data to Aperture Education.
     • Legacy Custom: Builds dependencies from orgs and courses.
       • Dependencies Disclaimer from ClassLink: When you select a course, you select every class contained in the course and all student and instructor enrollments associated with the classes. Each time you select a course, the system checks to see if the proper org dependency is selected. If you select a course referencing an org not in your selected permissions, the system selects that org as well to conform to the OneRoster® standard, which requires all courses to have valid dependencies.

Sending Rostering Data to the DESSA System via SFTP Export

After setting the permissions for the data you will send, the next step is to send the rostering data by exporting CSV files and sending them via SFTP to the DESSA server to be imported into the DESSA System. To set this up, follow these instructions:

• In Roster Server, select Apps and click the gear ⚙️ icon next to the "Aperture Education Rostering" app.

• Select File Exports and enter the SERVER DETAILS. You will be sent the server details by a member of the DESSA System Data Operations Team.
• Scroll down and enter AUTHENTICATION DETAILS. You will be sent the username and password by a member of the Aperture Education Data Operations Team. 
• Scroll down the page and set up the FILE DETAILS needed for the export. Please use the export template OneRoster v1p1, make sure the file is zipped, and do not append a date to the file.
• Enter the SCHEDULE DETAILS and toggle on Enabled. We recommend sending the files daily to ensure your data is always up to date in the DESSA System. Please set the time to send files as no later than 11 PM EST to ensure your files are picked up by the import each morning. 
• Once you have set the scheduling details, click the Save button. Please also click Send Now to initiate the transfer immediately, and if you would like then you can also click the Dry Run button to preview what your data will look like.

ClassLink SSO

To utilize SSO with the DESSA System, you will need to add the appropriate Aperture Education SSO application to your ClassLink apps. As a ClassLink Administrator, follow these steps to add the applications.

Adding the Aperture Education SSO Applications

1. Click Applications
2. Select Add & Assign Apps
3. Click the App Library button
4. Search for the appropriate Aperture Education SSO app for your use case
   1. Staff SSO: Aperture Education
   2. Student SSO: Aperture Education - Student Portal
5. Click add on the appropriate apps for your use case

Assigning the Aperture Education SSO Applications

1. Click Applications
2. Select Add & Assign Apps
3. Locate the Aperture Education SSO app you would like to assign
4. Click the Assign button
5. In the Assign Application pop-up, click the Roster Server tab
6. Select "Aperture Education Rostering" from the select an application dro-down menu
7. Select the roles you want to assign this SSO application to
   1. Staff SSO: Aperture Education
   2. Student SSO: Aperture Education - Student Portal
8. Click Add Selected
